Adult Quit Programs

Freedom From Smoking (FFS)

The American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program is for tobacco users who are ready to quit. Because most people already know that smoking is bad for their health, the program focuses almost exclusively on how to quit, not why to quit.

Since it was first introduced over 35 years ago, the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® program has helped hundreds of thousands of Americans end their addiction to nicotine and begin new smokefree lives. Freedom From Smoking® is based on proven addiction and behavior change models.

The program offers a structured, systematic approach to quitting, and its positive messaging emphasizes the benefits of better health.

The Freedom From Smoking group clinic includes eight sessions and features a step-by-step plan for quitting tobacco. The clinic format encourages participants to work on the process and problems of quitting both individually and as part of a group. To learn more or find local clinics click here.

The Freedom From Smoking® Plus is a highly-interactive online behavioral change program that addresses today’s mobile lifestyles. It works on desktops, laptops, tablets and smartphones and includes telephone, chat and email support from trained tobacco cessation counselors. To learn more click here.

The Freedom From Smoking self-help manual can be used by individuals in a self-guided method of quitting. This 56-page interactive self-help workbook is based on the American Lung Association’s proven-effective Freedom From Smoking Clinic Program, and covers identifying triggers, removing roadblocks, addressing physical, mental and social aspects of addiction, preparing for quit day, handling social situations, preventing relapse and how to stay on track with lifestyle changes. The cost is $5.99 each and can be ordered through your local American Lung Association office. To place an order, call (717) 971-1122 or click here.

Quit-Smoking Medications – Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT)

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products have been proven as a valuable quitting tool to help adults quit tobacco. Medication nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is the use of nicotine in the form of gum, skin patch, nasal spray, inhaler, or lozenge. It reduces the intensity of the withdrawal symptoms. Products, such as bupropion (also known as Zyban® or Wellbutrin®) and varenicline (Chantix®), are non-nicotine tobacco cessation medications available with a prescription. People who use these NRT products and medications double, or possibly triple, their rate of success to quit. Your medication may also be covered by your health insurance. Contact your insurance provider to explore tobacco cessation benefits available through your plan. Community members in Northcentral, Northeast, and Southcentral PA can also join a local cessation class and receive up to 4 free weeks of NRT. Visit our local quitting programs page (LINK) to find a clinic near you.
